TANGAIL, June 12: State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku has pledged to renovate and preserve the historic Bhashani Hall in Tangail and make it fully functional at the earliest opportunity, describing the initiative as part of a broader effort to build a “Model Tangail.”
The state minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Friday morning after inspecting the dilapidated condition of the hall, one of Tangail’s most prominent cultural landmarks.
“Bhashani Hall is a highly significant and historic institution for Tangail,” he said. “At present, cultural activists in the district do not have a suitable venue to organise programmes. Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani was one of the great leaders in Bangladesh’s history, and preserving a hall associated with his legacy is a responsibility that belongs to all of us.”
Recalling the historical importance of the venue, Tuku said Bhashani Hall, once regarded as the cultural heart of Tangail, had lost much of its glory due to years of neglect.
He noted that the hall was inaugurated by former president Ziaur Rahman, which further enhanced its historical significance.
“Tangail was once known as a cultural city. It is unacceptable that a major auditorium in such a city should remain abandoned for years,” he said.
The state minister said renovation work would begin soon to revive cultural activities in the district and provide local artists with a proper platform for performances and events.
Among those accompanying the state minister during the visit were Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department Khalekuzzaman Chowdhury, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sanjoy Kumar Mahanta, Tangail district BNP President Hasanuzzamil Shahin, former district BNP Member Secretary Mahmudul Haque Sanu, and Tangail Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahin Mia, among others.
