Human chain at Kaptai over frequent power cuts

KAPTAI, RANGAMATI, June 12: A human chain was formed in Kaptai Upazila on Friday demanding an end to excessive load-shedding and ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply.

The programme was held around 5pm on Kaptai New Bazar road, organised by the Kaptai Youth Club on behalf of people from all walks of life.

Speakers at the human chain said that although electricity is generated in Kaptai and supplied to the national grid, local residents are being deprived of reliable power. They alleged that power cuts occur for hours during both day and night, with electricity going off and returning 20 to 30 times a day.

They said the frequent outages have severely disrupted the lives of students, traders, and both public and private industrial production activities, causing widespread economic losses. They also described the situation as a major source of suffering for people across the area.

From the programme, participants warned that if the electricity situation is not improved within one week, they would announce a protest march next Friday.

Among those who spoke at the human chain were Kaptai Youth Club founder Salahuddin Jithu, Kaptai Union BNP General Secretary Kamal Hakim, Kaptai Upazila Sramik Dal General Secretary Abdullah Al Nahiyaan Dalim, Union Parishad member Iman Ali, New Bazar trader Kamal Uddin, and BSBPI student Md Abu Saim, among others.
