Teacher recruitment delayed by legal battles: Edn minister

Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan has said the recruitment of thousands of teachers has been delayed due to ongoing legal complications, despite the government’s efforts to resolve the cases.

Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan on Wednesday said the recruitment of teachers, including more than 75,000 posts, has been stalled due to court cases and legal complications.

Speaking in Parliament the minister said the government has been trying to resolve the legal issues since taking charge of the ministry nearly four months ago, but the cases have not yet appeared on the cause list of the Appellate Division.

The minister made the remarks while responding to a statement by Noakhali-2 lawmaker Zainul Abedin Faruk regarding the shortage of headmasters in government primary schools.

“Not only 32,509 teachers, but another 26,000 and 17,000 teacher appointments are also stuck due to various legal complications,” Milan said.

He said the shortage of teachers across the country has become a major concern. Recruitment of heads of institutions through the Non-Government Teachers’ Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA), appointment of college principals and other administrative posts are also facing delays because of court cases.

Addressing the Deputy Speaker, Milan said around 33,000 headmaster positions have become vacant. He said many eligible teachers are retiring without getting the opportunity to become headmasters due to the delays.

The minister also said the process of administrative transfers of primary school teachers has already been sent to upazila, district and divisional levels.
