Muslims across Bangladesh are observing the holy day of Ashura on Friday, marking the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar.

The day holds profound religious, historical and spiritual significance, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SA), and his companions at the Battle of Karbala.

Ashura is regarded as one of the most significant occasions in Islamic history. On the 10th of Muharram in 61 AH (680 CE), Imam Hussain (RA), along with members of his family and loyal companions, embraced martyrdom on the plains of Karbala while standing against tyranny and injustice. Their sacrifice remains a timeless symbol of truth, justice, human dignity and unwavering faith.

Marking the occasion, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages, urging the nation to uphold the values of Ashura and work towards building a peaceful, humane, just and prosperous Bangladesh.

The government has declared a public holiday to observe the occasion.

Religious discussions, Qur'an recitations, milad mahfils, prayers and special munajats have been arranged across the country.

Members of the Shia community are observing the day in a solemn atmosphere through Tazia processions, mourning gatherings and other religious programmes, particularly in the capital.

To mark the occasion, the Islamic Foundation under the Ministry of Religious Affairs organised a discussion titled "Importance and Significance of Ashura" followed by a prayer session at the south veranda of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken extensive security measures to ensure the peaceful observance of Tazia processions and other mourning programmes in the capital.

DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said comprehensive arrangements have been made for law enforcement, traffic management and overall public safety. Participants have been instructed not to carry sharp weapons, flammable materials, sticks, bags or suspicious packages during processions. The use of high-volume sound systems, drums, fireworks and firecrackers has also been prohibited.

The DMP has requested motorists and commuters to use alternative routes from 10:00am until the conclusion of the Tazia processions to avoid traffic congestion and facilitate the smooth movement of participants.
