GOPALGANJ, June 29: The authorities of Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU) have permanently dismissed 17 teachers, including 16 for failing to rejoin work after the expiry of their study leave and one for violating government service rules and alleged ethical misconduct.

The decision was confirmed in an office order signed by University Registrar Md Enamuzzaman on Sunday.

According to the order, the decision was taken at the 43rd meeting of the university's Board of Regents held on June 23. The board decided to dismiss 16 teachers who had remained abroad on unauthorised study leave and failed to return to their duties despite repeated written notices from the university authorities.

The dismissed teachers are Associate Professors Md Amirul Islam and Ashraful Hossain Howlader, Assistant Professor Pantha Protim Sarkar, and Lecturers Md Ahsanullah, Md Khairul Bashar and Upoma Das of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Assistant Professor Kakoli Khatun of the Department of Statistics; Lecturer Moymuna Begum Koli of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering; Associate Professor Dr Debabrata Pal of the Department of Chemistry; Assistant Professor Mohammad Rubaiyat Rahman of the Department of Law; Assistant Professor Md Mizanur Rahman of the Department of Public Administration; Assistant Professor Tasnia Nahian Zulfikar of the Department of Pharmacy; Lecturer Adhara Tahsin of the Department of Civil Engineering; Assistant Professor Farzana Yasmin of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Assistant Professor Md Ujjal Hossain of the Department of Management Studies; and Assistant Professor Mabia Khatun of the Department of Finance and Banking.

University sources said the teachers had been repeatedly instructed in writing to resume their duties after the expiry of their study leave. As they failed to respond to the university's directives, the authorities decided to terminate their employment to ensure the smooth continuation of academic activities.
The office order also directed the dismissed teachers to refund all financial benefits they received from the university during their leave in accordance with existing rules.

In a separate decision, the university also permanently dismissed Assistant Professor Fatema Khatun of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering on charges of violating government service rules and alleged ethical misconduct.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the university's Deputy Director (Public Relations), Md Mahbubul Alam.
