Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said there were no alternative to raising public awareness in preventing dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
He said the incumbent government has already formed a national committee to tackle mosquito-borne diseases and urged authorities to further strengthen online awareness campaigns to encourage preventive behaviour among citizens.
The minister made the remarks while addressing “Workshop on Insights Dissemination of the Improvement of Urban Public Health Preventive Services Project (IUPHPSP)” as the chief guest at Hotel Sonargaon in Dhaka.
Speaking at the event, he said the national committee on mosquito-borne disease prevention has already held its first meeting and is actively working to address the growing public health challenge. He expressed hope that the Improvement of Urban Public Health Preventive Services Project (IUPHPSP) would play a significant role in supporting the government’s efforts.
Officials at the workshop said the IUPHPSP, implemented by the Local Government Division (LGD) with financial support from the World Bank, aims to strengthen preventive public health services in urban areas. The project focuses on enhancing disease prevention capacity, improving public health management, and developing effective strategies to combat dengue and other communicable diseases in cities.
Among others, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan, Director General of the Monitoring, Evaluation and Inspection Wing Md. Mahmudul Hasan, NDC, Project Director of the IUPHPSP Abul Khayer Mohammad Hafizullah Khan, and other senior government officials attended the workshop.
