A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced a woman to death for murdering her husband, dismembering the body into six pieces, and attempting to conceal the crime in Dhaka’s Mohakhali area five years ago.
Judge Nazmun Nahar Nipu of Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court-16 delivered the verdict against Fatema Begum alias Shilpi. The court also sentenced her to seven years imprisonment and fined her Tk 10,000 for concealing the body, with an additional three months imprisonment in default of payment.
According to the prosecution, on the night of May 30, 2021, police recovered the headless torso of autorickshaw driver Moyna Mia, alias Shakil, from a drum in Mohakhali’s Amtali area.
The same night, officers recovered his severed arms and legs from a bag near Ena bus counter at Mohakhali Bus Terminal. His body parts were recovered in six pieces over two days.
Investigators from Detective Branch (DB) arrested Fatema within 12 hours of launching an investigation. During interrogation and later in a confessional statement before a magistrate, she admitted that she had sedated her husband with sleeping pills before slitting his throat and dismembering the body following disputes over family matters, financial issues and his multiple marriages.
The prosecution said Fatema disposed of the body parts at different locations in Mohakhali and threw the victim’s severed head into Gulshan Lake.
The victim’s second wife, Nasrin, filed the case with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station on June 1, 2021. Police submitted the charge sheet on October 24, 2022, and the court framed charges on March 12, 2023. During the trial, the court examined 17 of the 26 prosecution witnesses before delivering the verdict.
