A housewife sustained severe burn injuries after her sister-in-law allegedly poured boiling rice and starchy water from a cooking pot over her body in Bauphal of Patuakhali on Saturday.

The critically injured was first given primary treatment at Bauphal Upazila Health Complex before being referred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for advanced treatment.

The victim is Sharmin Begum, wife of Dulal Peyada of Karpurkathi village. Accused Salma Begum is her husband’s sister.

Sharmin Begum was in the kitchen when her sister-in-law, Salma Begum, suddenly picked up the pot of boiling rice and poured the hot rice along with the starchy rice water over her body.

Sharmin sustained burn injuries to different parts of her body immediately. Her relatives and locals rescued her and rushed her to Bauphal Upazila Health Complex.

Dr Mostafizur Rahman, emergency department physician at Bauphal Upazila Health Complex, said the hot rice and starchy rice water stuck to Sharmin Begum’s neck, chest, back, arms and legs, causing burns to about 20 per cent of her body.

After primary treatment, she was referred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for advanced treatment.

The victim’s husband, Dulal Peyada, said, “Salma had long been suffering from mental health problems. She suddenly committed the incident.”

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bauphal Police Station Sirajul Islam said police had been sent to the scene to investigate.
Legal action would be taken if the family files a complaint.
