Police have arrested Asaduzzaman Mithu, a recently expelled joint convener of the Khulna city unit of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, in connection with a case filed over the shooting at a group of journalists in Khulna.
A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Khulna Metropolitan Police arrested Mithu from Natun Rasta in the city on Monday afternoon. He was reportedly on his way from Khulna to Benapole at the time of his arrest. Mithu is the son of Sultan Mahmud and a resident of the Sonadanga residential area.
M Abdullah Zaman Mia, chief of the Khulna Metropolitan DB, said Mithu had been made a suspect in the case filed over the shooting incident. He said several journalists were sitting and talking near the western side of the United Nations Children's Park under Khulna Sadar Police Station around 1am on July 14 when unidentified assailants opened fire targeting them.
The DB chief said Mithu would be produced before a court on Tuesday. He added that police were also investigating his alleged links with top criminal Grenade Babu of Khulna.
Police sources said Mithu was also a suspect in the murder case of Masum Billah, former Rupsa upazila convenor of the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal and former president of a motor workers' union. They alleged that Mithu had identified Masum Billah to the assailants before the killing.
Masum Billah, 45, was shot and hacked to death inside a Bata shoe shop at Dakbangla intersection in central Khulna on March 4. At the time, local people detained Ashok Ghosh, an alleged active member of the Grenade Babu (B Company) group, with a pistol and handed him over to police.
Mithu was expelled from his post as joint convener of the Khulna city Swechchhasebak Dal over allegations of involvement in activities contrary to party discipline. The party's central office secretary, Abdullah Al Mamun, announced his expulsion in a press release signed on July 13.
