Two children dies after drowning in Canal in Nilphamari

Two children died after drowning in an irrigation canal in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari on Monday morning.

The deceased were identified as Pakhi Akter, 11, daughter of Abul Hossain of South Kakra village under Nautara Union, and Minha Akter, 4, daughter of Selim of Nij Para (Sonamonir Danga) village in the same union. They were aunt and niece.

According to family members and locals, the two children went to the irrigation canal in South Kakra village to bathe around 10:00 AM. At one point, Minha drowned in the canal. Pakhi went into the water to rescue her but also drowned.

A passerby noticed the incident and raised an alarm. Locals rushed to the spot, rescued the two children and took them to Dimla Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

Dimla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shawkat Ali Sarkar confirmed the incident.
