National Rural Development Day was observed in Narayanganj on Monday under the theme, "Developed villages, prosperous nation-Bangladesh first."
The programme began with a rally from the Deputy Commissioner's office that marched through different roads of the city before returning to the office premises. Saplings were later distributed among beneficiaries of the Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB), while loans were handed over to several entrepreneurs and freedom fighters.
A discussion was held at the Deputy Commissioner's conference room, attended by Deputy Commissioner Md Raihan Kabir, District Council Administrator Md Mamun Mahmud, and other officials.
Speaking at the discussion, Deputy Commissioner Md Raihan Kabir said sustainable national development is not possible without the development of rural communities.
He also said a 2010 study by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) estimated BRDB's contribution to the country's GDP at 1.93 per cent, reflecting the role of its cooperative members in the agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors.
