A total of 438 people were killed and 561 were injured in 472 road accidents across the country in June.
Executive Director for the Road Safety Foundation, Sayeedur Rahman informed the statistics in a press conference on Monday (July 6). The conference stated that 44 women and 56 children were killed in those accidents, according to data from nine dailies, 17 regional alongwith electronic media and foundation.
The statistics said that there were 145 bike accidents that killed 134, which is 30.59 per cent of the total casualties. Moreover, 91 passersby faced death which is 20.77 per cent of the total death toll. Lastly, 57 drivers and assistants deaths were recorded.
The data shows that 112 passengers from three wheelers, 37 truck drivers, 27 bus passengers, 14 private car and microbus passengers and 15 local vehicle passengers lost their lives during these accidents.
It shows 32 per cent occurred in the highways, 41.10 per cent in the regional lanes and 12.07 per cent of accidents occurred in the city roads.
The nature of the accidents-- 43.64 pre cent of the accidents took place due to the losing control of the vehicle, 23.09 per cent head on collision and 20.55 per cent of the cases show pedestrians were run over by the vehicles.
Division based stats show that Dhaka division experienced most of the casualties-- 116 accidents were recorded which took 118 lives, 113 were killed in Chittagong and 77 were in Rajshahi. Least accidents were seen in Mymensingh- 16 deaths in 19 accidents. There were 32 accidents in the capital that took 24 lives and 49 were injured.
Data shows that 58 of the deceased were students, 24 businessmen, 21 political persons, 19 sales representatives, 17 private development workers, 13 bank staffs, four teachers, four lawyers, two journalists and three engineers.
Road Safety Foundation informs that most of the accidents took place due to faulty vehicles, over speeding, driver’s incompetence, risky motorbike usage, violating traffic laws, fragile traffic systems and extortions taken in the roads are some major reasons behind these accidents.
