A husband and wife died after being electrocuted while disconnecting an electric auto-rickshaw from its charger at their residence in Barguna Sadar upazila on Monday morning. Their elder daughter sustained injuries after trying to rescue them.
The incident occurred around 8:30 am in Dalbhanga village under Dhalua Union of the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Md Bellal, 45, son of Abdur Rashid, and his wife, Mosammat Komola, 40. Their 12-year-old daughter, Arifa, was injured in the incident.
According to family members and local residents, Bellal had been constructing a cattle shed at his home and was preparing to go to the market to purchase corrugated iron sheets after completing most of the work. While disconnecting his battery-powered auto-rickshaw from the power supply, he was electrocuted.
His wife rushed to save him but also came into contact with the live electricity and was electrocuted. Their daughter Arifa was similarly injured while attempting to rescue her parents.
Locals immediately disconnected the electricity supply and rushed the three victims to Barguna 250-bed General Hospital, where doctors declared Bellal and Komola dead. Arifa received primary treatment and is now out of danger, according to her family.
Neighbour Firoza told Jago News that Bellal was the first to be electrocuted while handling the charging auto-rickshaw, and his wife and daughter were subsequently shocked while trying to save him.
Bellal's brother-in-law, Md Kabir, said he found the couple dead after arriving at the hospital, while Arifa was recovering after treatment.
Dr Apurba Kumar Chowdhury, Medical Officer at the Emergency Department of Barguna 250-bed General Hospital, confirmed that the couple had died before or shortly after being brought to the hospital. He said police had been informed as the deaths were reportedly caused by electrocution.
