Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdelouahab Saidani has reaffirmed Algeria's commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Bangladesh, highlighting the two countries' shared history of sacrifice for independence, growing economic cooperation, and expanding investment opportunities.

Speaking at the celebration of Algeria's 64th Independence Day and Youth Day in Dhaka, the ambassador said July 5 marks the end of 132 years of colonial rule, describing Algeria's independence as a global symbol of resilience, justice and the enduring struggle for freedom.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan attended the event as the chief guest. Among others, senior government officials, diplomats, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of the Bangladesh-Algeria Business Forum (BABF) led by its President Mohd. Nurul Mostafa, journalists, war veterans, distinguished guests and religious leaders also attended.

Highlighting Algeria's economic potential, the ambassador said the country is a strategic gateway between the Mediterranean and the Sahel and a major energy supplier to Europe, accounting for about 14 percent of the continent's gas imports. He noted that Algeria's GDP is projected to exceed US$317 billion in 2026.

He invited Bangladeshi investors to explore opportunities in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, energy and information technology. Recalling the historic ties between the two nations, he noted that Algeria was the first Arab country to officially recognize Bangladesh after its independence in 1971.
