Two fishermen remained missing after two fishing trawlers sank in rough seas in the Bay of Bengal off Fakirhat in Barguna's Taltoli upazila on Tuesday night.
The trawlers, carrying 18 fishermen, had left Fakirhat Fish Landing Centre earlier in the day for hilsa fishing. As the weather deteriorated and the sea turned rough, one trawler sank after being battered by strong waves. Its crew boarded the second trawler, which also capsized shortly afterwards, throwing all 18 fishermen into the sea.
Another fishing trawler rescued 16 fishermen around 3:00am on Wednesday. They were admitted to Mahipur Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
The missing fishermen were identified as Kalam Paikar and Shahid, both residents of Sonakata union in Taltoli.
Taltoli Coast Guard Station Contingent Commander Ashraful Alam said rescue operations could not begin immediately because of rough sea conditions but would start as soon as the weather improved.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Zahidul Islam said the Coast Guard and river police had been instructed to take necessary steps, while the administration was monitoring the treatment of the rescued fishermen.
