Two tourists swept away in Cox’s Bazar sea, one dead and one missing

A tourist died and another went missing after being swept away by strong waves while bathing in the sea at Laboni Point in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Yasin Khan, 25, of Kuril Chowrasta in Dhaka. The missing tourist is Mohammad Ibrahim Khan, 27, also from Dhaka.

The incident occurred around 2:30pm when Yasin and Ibrahim entered the sea with other members of their group. Strong waves and currents swept them away, according to lifeguards and witnesses.

Rescuers later recovered Yasin in critical condition and took him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

A joint search operation is underway to locate Ibrahim. Fire Service, Sea-Safe lifeguards, beach workers and tourist police are taking part in the search around Laboni Point and nearby areas.

Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said police went to the scene after receiving reports that two tourists had been swept away. One was taken to hospital and declared dead, while efforts were continuing to rescue the other.

Yasin and Ibrahim had travelled to Cox’s Bazar from Dhaka with a group of around 110 tourists. The group was staying at Hotel Bista Bay in Kalatali. Many members of the group work for a company called I Jet KP, while several students were also part of the group.
