
Two people were killed and four others injured in a three-way collision involving a pickup truck, a motorcycle and a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Bhulli upazila of Thakurgaon on Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred around the morning on the Panchagarh-Thakurgaon highway in the Kochubari Post Office Para area of Bhulli.
The deceased were Anwara Begum, 60, wife of Shahjahan Ali of Boro Balia area in Bhulli, and Jibon Adhikari, 40, son of the late Chhatrish Adhikari of Bhulli Lauthuti area.
The injured were motorcycle rider Harunur Rashid, 38, son of Idris Ali of Lakshmirhat Bazar; auto-rickshaw driver Sahirul Islam, 23, son of Hafizul Islam of Kismat Keshurbari; Zarina, 40, of Boro Balia; and Shafiqul Islam.
According to police and local sources, a cargo pickup was travelling from Dhaka towards Panchagarh when it reached the Kochubari Post Office Para area and collided head-on with a motorcycle and a battery-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction.
All three vehicles were damaged in the crash, leaving the drivers and passengers injured.
Locals and Fire Service personnel rescued the injured and took them to Thakurgaon 250-bed General Hospital, where Anwara Begum and Jibon Adhikari died while undergoing treatment.
As the condition of motorcycle rider Harunur Rashid and auto-rickshaw driver Sahirul Islam was critical, they were referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Police detained pickup driver Habibur Rahman, 24, son of Abdul Hamid of Bishkakuri village in Purbadhala upazila of Netrakona. He was taken to Bhulli Police Station along with the accident-involved pickup.
Bhulli Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nure Alam Siddiqui said two people were killed in the collision involving the pickup, motorcycle and battery-run auto-rickshaw.
“The injured were rescued and sent to hospital. The pickup driver has been detained along with the vehicle. Legal proceedings are underway,” he said.
