The intensity of heavy rainfall in the capital Dhaka is expected to subside gradually, while precipitation is likely to increase across the country's northern regions from Monday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecast.

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said on Sunday (July 12) that although the threat of heavy rain in Dhaka is diminishing, rainfall is expected to intensify in the divisions of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet.

The BMD in its latest bulletin said that light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds in most areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions over the next 24 hours.

It also warned that isolated areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.

According to the BMD, Dhaka received 97mm of rainfall between Saturday and 6AM on Sunday, followed by another 95mm from 6AM to 3PM, reflecting the severity of the recent downpour.

Nazmul Haque attributed the prolonged heavy rainfall to the combined influence of a low-pressure system over the Bay and an active southwest monsoon.
