'Trial of Surya Sen' to be staged at BSA on Friday

Dhaka Padatik will stage the 44th performance of its acclaimed production 'Trial of Surya Sen' at the Experimental Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) on Friday (July 17) at 7:00pm.

Based on the trial and execution of revolutionary leader Masterda Surya Sen, the play was written and originally directed by Ekushey Padak recipient Masum Aziz. Following his death, veteran actor-director Nader Chowdhury took over the production, introducing new elements to its staging while preserving its original vision.

The production has earned praise for its historical narrative, powerful dialogue and stage presentation. It has also been performed at two international theatre festivals in Delhi, receiving acclaim from audiences and critics.

Nader Chowdhury, who also portrays the role of Surya Sen, said the play presents an important chapter of the anti-British movement and hoped the younger generation would engage with its historical significance.

The cast includes Mahbuba Haque Kumkum, Manjurul Islam Nantu, Sabiha Zaman, Hasnahena Shilpi, Mamun Ur Rashid, Shyamal Hasan, Rabiul Milton and others.

The production features lighting design by Zakaria Kiran, music direction by Abul Bashar Sohel, and stage management by Shyamal Hasan.

The play premiered on January 18, 2018, and has since been staged successfully at home and abroad.
