French Ambassador to Bangladesh Jean-Marc Serre-Charlet has said France is committed to further strengthening its relationship with Bangladesh, citing renewed momentum in bilateral ties following the country's return to democratic governance.
He made the remarks while addressing a reception marking France's Bastille Day and National Day at the French Embassy in Dhaka on Tuesday (July 14). Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku attended the event as the chief guest.
The ambassador said France is eager to expand cooperation with Bangladesh across a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, education, culture, climate action and strategic affairs.
He noted that the recent peaceful and participatory national election had reinforced Bangladesh's democratic credentials and reflected the people's commitment to democratic values.
Jean-Marc Serre-Charlet said French President Emmanuel Macron had entrusted him with the responsibility of taking bilateral relations to a deeper and more diversified level. He also stressed the importance of increasing exchanges among business leaders, students, researchers and cultural figures from both countries.
Highlighting France's development partnership, the ambassador said the French Development Agency has extended nearly €2 billion in loans to Bangladesh since 2012 to support development and strengthen climate resilience. More than 80 percent of the agency's projects focus on climate action and biodiversity conservation.
He added that France considers Bangladesh a key partner in promoting peace, freedom of navigation and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, while expressing interest in enhancing cooperation in artificial intelligence, innovation and marine conservation.
