Government is set to launch a new pair of non-stop trains on Dhaka-Sylhet-Dhaka route to handle the rush of the passengers. Approval has already been granted for this new service, named ‘Tanguar Express.’
Railway Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam announced this information in the National Parliament on Wednesday while responding to a query from Sylhet MP Imran Ahmed Chowdhury. Minister said, ‘The Prime Minister has already approved the launch of a pair of new non-stop trains named 'Tanguar Express' on the Dhaka-Sylhet-Dhaka route.’
However, the formal launch depends on acquiring new engines and coaches to overcome the current shortage.
The minister added that a Development Project Proposal (DPP) is being drafted to acquire 200 meter-gauge passenger coaches.
Additionally, another DPP is pending approval to procure 30 meter-gauge diesel-electric locomotives funded by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). The train will hit the tracks once these coaches and engines are delivered.
Answering a question from Kurigram-2 MP Atiqur Rahman Mujahid, the minister said a new intercity train will also be launched on the Dhaka-Kurigram-Dhaka route after the acquisition of the 200 meter-gauge coaches and 30 AIIB-funded locomotives.
In response to a query from Khulna-2 MP Sheikh Jahangir Hossain, the minister stated that the renovation of the old tracks and modernization of the signaling system on the Khulna-Jessore route are underway.
Furthermore, replying to Mymensingh-6 MP Md Kamrul Hasan, he informed that a feasibility study for constructing a dual-gauge double line on the Joydebpur-Mymensingh-Jamalpur railway has already been completed.
