The stage is set for a fascinating tactical battle as Lionel Messi and Argentina prepare to take on Spain in Sunday's FIFA World Cup final. While Messi has been in sensational form throughout the tournament, he now faces the biggest challenge of all, a Spanish defence that has looked virtually impenetrable.

The final is expected to showcase a clash between the tournament's most influential attacking player and its most dominant defensive unit. Led by goalkeeper Unai Simón, Spain have kept six clean sheets in the competition, equalling the record for the most by any team in a single World Cup.

Before conceding to Belgium's Charles De Ketelaere in the quarter-finals, Simón went an astonishing 649 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal. Spain's defensive brilliance continued in the semi-finals, where they restricted France's star-studded attack of Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise to just 0.31 expected goals (xG), the lowest figure recorded in a World Cup semi-final since 1994.

Messi, meanwhile, is enjoying one of the finest World Cup campaigns of his career. After lighting up the group stage with a hat-trick in the opening match and a brace in the second, he surpassed Miroslav Klose to become the tournament's all-time leading goalscorer.

In the knockout rounds, the Argentine captain has transformed into a creative force. He scored and provided a brilliant cross for Cristian Romero's goal against Egypt in the Round of 16, set up Alexis Mac Allister in the quarter-final against Switzerland, and delivered two assists while creating four chances in the semi-final victory over England.

With 12 World Cup assists to his name, Messi now stands alone as the competition's all-time leading assist provider.

All eyes will now be on the ultimate showdown: can Lionel Messi unlock Spain's seemingly unbeatable defence and lead Argentina to World Cup glory, or will Spain's iron wall have the final say?
