Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman has warned that the current government will face public rejection if it fails to implement the outcome of the referendum, saying the government’s legitimacy is linked to respecting the people’s verdict.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman made the remarks while addressing a divisional rally of the 11-party alliance at Hemayet Uddin Eidgah ground in Barishal on Saturday afternoon.

The rally was organised demanding implementation of the referendum verdict, reduction of public suffering, control of commodity prices, improvement of communication systems, and overall development of the neglected southern region.

The Jamaat chief said the people would compel the government to implement the decisions of the referendum and called for collective efforts in this regard.

“Seventy percent of the people gave their verdict in the referendum. On the same day’s election, you are claiming to be the government. Without that referendum, this government would not be accepted. If the referendum fails, this government will also be made to fail,” he said.

Addressing the BNP, Shafiqur Rahman said the party should understand the importance of a caretaker government system without causing further damage to the country. He urged political parties to work together for nation-building but warned that continued pressure on the streets could create instability.

He claimed that the referendum result reflected people’s rejection of “old politics and governance systems” and their demand for a new political structure.

Criticising the government’s position on reforms, he alleged that promises made before the referendum were not being implemented after coming to power. He also questioned the formation of a constitutional reform committee and described it as unconstitutional.

The Jamaat leader further accused the BNP of retaining several ordinances introduced during previous years and warned against what he described as attempts to mislead the public over reforms.

Referring to political movements from 2006 to 2024, Shafiqur Rahman said people had made sacrifices during years of political struggle and rejected what he called authoritarian rule.

He also called for proper recognition of the participants of the 2024 movement, saying the events of 1971 and 2024 should be honoured separately according to their historical significance.

Several leaders of the 11-party alliance also addressed the rally, including Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Col (retd) Oli Ahmed Bir Bikram, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Mamunul Haque, AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju, and other alliance leaders.
