Nationalised colleges require urgent reform

Education is the foundation of national development, and improving the quality of college education is essential for building a skilled workforce. Recognising this, the government nationalised at least one college in every upazila in 2016 to reduce educational disparities and expand access to higher education. Although the initiative was timely and commendable, most adopted colleges now face acute teacher shortages, administrative complexities, delayed recruitment, inadequate infrastructure and academic uncertainty.

The prolonged suspension of regular teacher recruitment has severely affected the quality of education, while unresolved service-related issues continue to demoralise teachers and staff. As a result, students are the worst sufferers.

The government should urgently recruit qualified teachers and staff, resolve administrative complications, upgrade laboratories, libraries and digital facilities, strengthen research and training, and ensure effective coordination among relevant authorities. Transforming adopted colleges into quality institutions requires sustained investment and timely reforms, not merely administrative nationalisation.
