A Bridge of bamboo, A life of risk for Sakhipur villagers

A risky bamboo bridge over the Morichkuri canal has remained the only means of crossing for thousands of residents of Basharchala and Morichkuri villages in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail, leaving locals, students and patients vulnerable to accidents.

The bamboo bridge, located between Basharchala village under Kalia Union and Morichkuri village under Kakrajhan Union, is used daily by people from both sides of the canal. Despite the country’s rapid development, residents say they have not yet received a permanent bridge over the waterway.

During a recent visit, it was found that several educational institutions, including Mahanandapur Bijoy Smriti High School, Mahanandapur Government Primary School, Jitashwari Dakhil Madrasa, Jitashwari Government Primary School and Sarashia-Basharchala High School, are located near the bridge. Hundreds of students are forced to cross the fragile bamboo structure every day to attend classes.

The bridge is also an important route for villagers travelling to Mahanandapur and Basharchala markets, where weekly village markets are held every Monday and Wednesday. Elderly people, emergency patients and general commuters have to take significant risks while using the bridge.

Locals said several people have already fallen from the bamboo structure, and there is a fear that a major accident could occur at any time if a permanent solution is not taken.

Kakrajhan Union BNP Convener Amir Hamza Sikder said constructing a permanent bridge over the canal is urgently needed to end the suffering of residents. He added that he personally built the temporary bamboo bridge at his own expense to facilitate movement of villagers.

Abdul Latif Mia, a school teacher and resident of Mahanandapur village, said he had crossed the risky bridge several times and witnessed the hardships faced by students and elderly people. He urged the authorities concerned to construct a permanent bridge for the people of the two villages.

Sakhipur Upazila Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Md Arifur Rahman, said bamboo bridges in different areas of the upazila are being identified and steps will be taken to construct permanent bridges at those locations on a priority basis.
