PM to make UN General Assembly debut in September

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the first time as head of government during the body’s 81st session in New York this September.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Rahman will leave for the United States on September 21 and deliver Bangladesh’s national statement at the UNGA on September 24.

Preparations for the visit are already underway. The trip will mark the prime minister’s first official visit to New York since assuming office and his debut address at the UN General Assembly.

Officials said this year’s UNGA holds special significance for Bangladesh, as the session will be chaired by newly elected UN General Assembly President Dr. Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh.

During the visit, the prime minister is also expected to attend a reception hosted by US President Donald Trump, join a programme with Bangladeshi expatriates, and hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the sidelines of the assembly.

The visit is expected to last four to five days, with Rahman likely to depart New York on September 25 or 26.
