Traffic remained disrupted in Dhaka's Uttara area on Monday after a covered van that overturned near Rajlakshmi shortly after midnight could not be removed even by midday.
The accident occurred late Sunday night when the covered van hit a road divider and overturned across the carriageway. While the lane carrying vehicles towards Dhaka remained open, traffic on the outbound lane from the capital was severely affected.
The vehicle has been lying at the entrance to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane since the accident.
Traffic police made two unsuccessful attempts to remove it using two recovery vehicles of different capacities.
SM Hasibur Rahman, Assistant Commissioner (AC) of the Airport Zone under Uttara Traffic Division, said the overturned covered van was loaded with goods and locked, making recovery more difficult.
He added that the driver and other staff were not at the scene, having either fled or gone elsewhere to arrange for the vehicle's recovery.
"Our recovery vehicles are unable to move the truck. Rajarbagh's heavy-duty Recovery Vehicle-1 is currently out of service."
Hasibur Rahman added that the vehicle owner had been contacted using the phone number displayed on the truck. The cargo must be unloaded before the covered van can be removed from the road.
