Govt Secondary Education in Crisis

Letter To the Editor
Dear Sir,

The prolonged stagnation in teacher promotions and the alarming number of vacant posts in government secondary schools deserve urgent attention. According to recent data from the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, 379 of 572 head teacher posts and 528 of 703 assistant head teacher posts are vacant. More worryingly, 6,048 of 16,141 assistant teacher posts are also unfilled.

Such dearth of teachers is not merely administrative concerns; they directly affect classroom teaching, academic supervision and students’ learning outcomes. At the same time, many experienced teachers reportedly spend 15 to 30 years in the same position without receiving due promotions, creating frustration and undermining professional morale.

The authorities should therefore urgently streamline promotion procedures, fill vacant teaching and administrative posts, and introduce a transparent, time-bound career progression policy. Addressing these issues is essential not only for teachers’ dignity but also for ensuring quality secondary education for our children.
