Shakib bowled over again; this time by Pori Moni, on Facebook

Shakib Al Hasan ruled Bangladesh’s Facebook as the most followed page in the country for years. However, the formal national cricket captain has been outpaced by Dhallywood’s leading lady, Pori Moni, who has now claimed the crown of most followed Bangladeshi celebrity on Facebook.

A check of both pages showed Pori Moni cruising past 17 million followers, while Shakib is at over 16 million, a gap nearly a million that decisively settles who is going to win this unofficial online contest.

However, this makes Pori Moni the undisputed leader among Bangladeshi celebrities on Facebook, edging out a rival who has held that top spot for years.

The rivalry, though, hasn't always been this lopsided. Just last year, the two stars were running neck and neck, with Shakib briefly pulling ahead again before Pori Moni came storming back to close - and ultimately erase - the gap.

Their pages tell two very different stories about how each star engages online. Shakib keeps it minimal, following just six accounts - among them football icon Lionel Messi, teammates Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad, pacer Rubel Hossain, plus the Shakib Al Hasan Foundation and Fortune Barishal.

Pori Moni, on the other hand, runs a much livelier follow list - 161 accounts and counting. Alongside Messi, she follows a glittering mix of local and international stars: Shakib Khan, Shabnur, Hrithik Roshan, Vidya Balan, Katrina Kaif, Vicky Kaushal, Shraddha Kapoor, Morgan Freeman, and even Taylor Swift.

Nearly a decade into her acting career, Pori Moni has stayed firmly in the headlines for one reason or another - and this social media record is her latest talking point. Shakib, meanwhile, continues to make news well beyond the boundary rope, with plenty happening off the field in recent times.

Either way, the numbers don't lie: in the battle for Facebook supremacy, Pori Moni has finally left her long-time rival trailing - and the top spot among Bangladeshi celebrities is now hers to defend.
