Rumours of Nagad baseless: ICT minister

Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, Information Technology, Science and Technology (ICT) Fakir Mahbub Anam on Wednesday said the rumours surrounding Nagad are baseless.

He urged the media and the public to verify information before publishing or sharing news.

The minister made the remarks while addressing a programme at Dak Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon, marking the inauguration of franchise post offices and the formal handover of a cheque worth Tk 18.57 crore from Nagad to the Directorate of Posts as its share of profits from revenue earned in the 2025-26 financial year.

"Efforts are underway to make the Bangladesh Post Office (BPO) more popular and accessible. The rumours being spread about Nagad are completely baseless. I urge everyone not to be misled by such misinformation," the minister said.

He added that the government's management of Nagad would continue to ensure market competition. The goal is to transform state-owned institutions into more efficient, profitable and public-oriented organisations, he said.

The franchise post office model, which has been successfully implemented in many countries, will help bring postal services closer to people's doorsteps in Bangladesh, he added.

In the first phase, four franchise post offices will be launched in Dhaka and four outside the capital, with plans to expand the initiative nationwide. The government is also working to transform more than 9,000 post offices across the country into modern service centres.
