Facing severe financial difficulties, Peru's historic football club Deportivo Municipal has raised funds through an unconventional initiative by selling 1,000 sponsorship slots on a single team jersey. The campaign attracted overwhelming support from small businesses and entrepreneurs, with all slots sold within three months.
Four-time Peruvian champions Deportivo Municipal launched the campaign, titled "The Thousand Sponsors of Muni," after suffering financial setbacks that saw the club relegated to the country's third-tier Copa Perú competition following the loss of major sponsors and mounting debt.
Under the initiative, individuals, companies and small businesses could purchase a sponsorship slot on the club's jersey for 200 Peruvian soles (around 300 Brazilian reais). The response exceeded expectations, allowing the club to sell all 1,000 available spaces in just three months.
The new jersey features a checkerboard design, with each square displaying the name or logo of a different sponsor. Despite the unique layout, the club retained its traditional red diagonal sash and official crest to preserve its identity.
To facilitate the campaign, Deportivo Municipal also launched a dedicated online platform. In addition to having their brands displayed on the jersey, sponsors received benefits including discounts on match tickets and official club merchandise.
Club officials said the funds raised will support the men's team's participation in Liga 3, the women's team's campaign in Liga de Ascenso, and the development of the club's youth academy.
The initiative has drawn mixed reactions from sports marketing experts. Ivan Martinho, a professor at ESPM, described it as a creative and practical solution to the club's immediate financial problems. However, he cautioned that it is not a substitute for long-term financial sustainability, stressing the importance of building a stable sponsorship portfolio and recurring revenue streams.
Sports marketing specialist Fabio Wolff also acknowledged the plan's effectiveness in addressing short-term cash flow issues but warned that featuring so many sponsors on a single jersey reduces the visibility of each brand. He said this could diminish the commercial value of the shirt and make it more difficult to attract major sponsors in the future.
