Those seeking to forget 1971 do not believe in Bangladesh: Mirza Fakhrul

Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that people of all communities - including Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians; have been living together in Bangladesh for thousands of years, leaving no room for division.

"Those who want to forget or erase the Great Liberation War of 1971 do not believe in Bangladesh," he stated.

He made the remarks on Friday while speaking as the chief guest at a view-exchange meeting titled "Protection and Security of Minorities" held in the capital.

Mirza Fakhrul said, "Our main weakness is that we have not yet been able to build a full-fledged democratic state. Over the past 15 years, the country's democracy was completely destroyed. However, we now want to overcome those past wounds and move forward anew."

Pointing out that a vested interest group is trying to create division in the name of religion, he said, "There are many problems and major challenges ahead. There is no scope to downplay the July movement. However, those who want to use religion to cause cracks in society must be resisted at all costs."

Calling for the preservation of communal harmony and diversity at any cost, the LGRD Minister added, "Ensuring the security and equal rights of people of all faiths is the primary responsibility of a democratic state."
