Indian national held with 427g gold at Shah Amanat Airport

An Indian national was arrested with 427 grammes of gold at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on Saturday morning.

The detainee was identified as Tamim Ansari Mohammad Ali, 42, a resident of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Airport authorities detained him while he was crossing the Green Channel around 8:30am after arriving in Chattogram from Sharjah on an Air Arabia flight.

Acting on a tip-off, officials from Airport Customs Intelligence, National Security Intelligence (NSI) and the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) searched him and seized the gold.

The recovered gold is estimated to be worth Tk 81.66 lakh, according to airport authorities.

Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil, an engineer in charge of public relations at Shah Amanat International Airport, confirmed the arrest.

He said the detainee told authorities that he was a businessman who regularly travelled on the route.

A case was filed against him with Patenga Police Station on charges of gold smuggling. He was later handed over to police.
