BMU hosts global lecture on Genomics, Precision cancer care

An international lecture series on genomics and precision medicine, focusing on the future of cancer treatment, was held at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on Sunday, bringing together local and international experts to discuss advancements in precision oncology, molecular diagnostics and personalised cancer care.
The programme titled “Transforming Cancer Care through Genomics and Precision Medicine” was organised by the Department of Clinical Oncology at BMU at the department’s conference room.
BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad attended the event as the chief guest, while Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr Mujibur Rahman Hawladar was present as the special guest.
Professor Dr Syed Md Akram Hossain, chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology and patron of the event, said genomics and precision medicine have brought significant changes to modern cancer treatment. He said selecting treatment based on a patient’s genetic and molecular characteristics can improve treatment outcomes, reduce unnecessary side effects and ensure personalised cancer care.
He stressed the need for developing skilled manpower and research capacity in genomics, molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics, genetic counselling and precision oncology in Bangladesh.
Two international experts delivered keynote presentations at the session. They were Dr Mark Christiansen, head of UCL Genomics and associate professor at University College London, UK, and Dr Diego Marin, adjunct professor at the Department of Human Genetics at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA.
The foreign experts discussed recent developments in identifying genetic alterations in cancer, molecular profiling, biomarker-based treatment selection, targeted therapies, hereditary cancer risk assessment and precision oncology. They also highlighted the importance of integrating genomic data into clinical decision-making, while ensuring quality laboratories, trained professionals, data security and ethical management.
Dr Farzana Yasmin, a graduate of the National University of Singapore, joined the event virtually from Singapore and spoke about the prospects of precision medicine and genomics in Bangladesh, along with the importance of skill development, training and international collaboration.
Chief guest Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad underscored the importance of expanding genomics and precision medicine-based education, research and healthcare services at BMU.
Special guest Professor Dr Mujibur Rahman Hawladar stressed the need for genomic research, technology transfer, researcher training, joint studies and stronger collaboration with international institutions.
Faculty members, physicians, residents, researchers and students of the university’s Clinical Oncology Department attended the event. A question-and-answer session and scientific discussion were held after the lectures, where participants emphasised strengthening BMU’s capacity in genomics and precision oncology, promoting collaborative research, faculty and researcher exchange, and establishing long-term academic and research partnerships with national and international institutions.
