Appeal hearing in Ahsan Ullah Master murder case deferred to Aug 11

The Appellate Division has adjourned the hearing on appeals against the High Court verdict in the murder case of former Gazipur-2 MP Ahsan Ullah Master until August 11.

The four-member bench, led by Chief Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury, deferred proceedings on Sunday after the second day of hearings.

A Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced 22 people, including BNP leader Nurul Islam Sarkar, to death and six others to life imprisonment in 2005. In 2016, the High Court upheld the death sentences of six convicts, commuted seven death sentences to life imprisonment, acquitted seven others and declared proceedings against two deceased death-row convicts abated.

Following the High Court verdict, the convicted individuals filed appeals, while the state challenged the acquittals. Hearings resumed on July 28 and have now been postponed until August 11.

Ahsan Ullah Master was shot dead on May 7, 2004, during a public meeting at M.A. Majid Mia High School in Gazipur. He was elected MP from Gazipur-2 in 1996 and 2001.
