Bangladesh seeks stronger IOM support for safe migration, skilled workforce

Bangladesh has sought greater support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to promote safe and regular migration, expand opportunities for skilled workers abroad and curb irregular migration.

The call came during a meeting on Sunday between Foreign Adviser Shama Obaid Islam and IOM Deputy Director General for Operations Ugochi Daniels in Dhaka.

The foreign adviser praised the IOM’s longstanding support for Bangladesh’s migration and humanitarian efforts and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to implementing the Global Compact for Migration through its National Action Plan.

She requested IOM assistance in expanding regular migration channels, ensuring ethical recruitment, enhancing workers’ skills in line with international labour market demands and building partnerships in sectors such as healthcare, caregiving and agriculture.

The meeting also discussed protecting migrant workers’ rights, supporting the safe return and reintegration of Bangladeshis from crisis-hit countries, addressing climate-induced migration and combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

On the Rohingya issue, Bangladesh urged continued international support for the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals.

Daniels commended Bangladesh’s efforts to strengthen migration governance and acknowledged its leadership in promoting safe and orderly migration globally. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation on migration and humanitarian priorities.
