Fuel shortage fears trigger rush at filling stations

Concerns over a possible fuel shortage prompted long queues at several filling stations in Dhaka on Monday night, although no official announcement has been made regarding any disruption in fuel supply or a price hike.

Motorists lined up to buy petrol and octane, with many saying they wanted to stock up after hearing rumours of a possible shortage and higher prices. Filling station employees, however, said they had received no information about any supply disruption, despite a noticeable increase in demand.

The anxiety comes as the ongoing gas crisis continues to affect households and transport operators. Low gas pressure and limited supplies have led to long queues at CNG stations, where many drivers report waiting several hours to refuel. Some ambulance operators said the shortage has made long-distance trips more difficult, while CNG-powered auto-rickshaw drivers said extended waiting times have reduced their daily earnings.

Reports from some districts also suggest diesel sales have become more restricted, with transport operators claiming they were unable to purchase their usual quantities. However, the authorities have not confirmed any fuel shortage or announced plans to increase prices.

The government has acknowledged that the gas supply crisis is unlikely to be resolved quickly, while businesses have warned that fuel shortages are affecting industrial production. Consumers are now seeking an official clarification to address growing concerns over fuel availability.
