Inspector General of Police Ali Hossain Fakir has said the government is formulating a new law to curb terrorism and extortion, allowing police to file cases on their own initiative without formal complaints.
He made the remarks at a press conference at Khulna Police Lines on Saturday afternoon.
The IGP said the police-public relationship had deteriorated over the past 17 years, but the force had regained its morale after August 5. He added that police now wanted to become more humane and public-friendly.
He also lamented that police are labelled fascist when they use force to maintain law and order, while they are considered weak when they refrain from using force.
