Short-term flood feared in 10 districts over heavy rain

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) issued the warning in a bulletin on Wednesday (August 5), outlining the current situation and multi-day outlook for the country's major rivers.

According to the bulletin, water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in the northeastern region rose over the past 24 hours and are likely to continue rising for the next two days.

Consequently, adjacent low-lying areas in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts may experience flash floods as river waters could flow above danger levels in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Similarly, in the northern Rangpur division, water levels of the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers are rising rapidly. Water levels in the Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers may cross danger marks at several points within the next 24 hours, potentially creating short-term flood situations in the low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, and Gaibandha districts.

Meanwhile, water levels in the Someswari, Bhulai, and Kangsari rivers in Mymensingh division are also forecasted to swell over the next two days. This poses a threat of inundation in the low-lying regions of Sherpur, Mymensingh, and Netrokona districts.

The forecast further added that the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers are continuing their rising trend, which is expected to persist for the next five days.

Additionally, water levels in the Ganges-Padma basin as well as the Gomti, Muhuri, Feni, and Halda rivers in Chattogram division are likely to rise over the next three days.
