Family Card programme to be officially launched on August 16

The government will officially launch the Family Card programme on August 16, with plans to bring 16 million families under the scheme in phases over four years.

Social Welfare Minister AZM Zahid Hossain disclosed the information after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Family Cards at the Secretariat on Thursday, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the programme in Ward No. 8 of Latifabad Union in Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila. The programme will then be rolled out across the country in phases by the end of October, the minister said.

He said a pilot project conducted in 56 areas produced positive results. Problems with data collection in two areas of Jessore and Netrakona have been resolved, while the error rate in the remaining areas was below 3%.

A new questionnaire and fully online data collection system will be introduced from August 16. The information will be updated monthly to reflect changes in beneficiaries' circumstances.

The minister said a multi-level monitoring system has been introduced to ensure transparency. Monitoring committees will operate at union, upazila, district, division and national levels, while the Prime Minister will regularly oversee the programme.

The Family Card programme will operate through a dynamic social registry, allowing beneficiaries' socioeconomic status to be updated as their circumstances change.

The minister said the programme would have no discrimination based on religion, caste or political identity and aims to address weaknesses in the distribution of government allowances and Family Cards.
