Green chilli prices drop to Tk 120 as Indian imports resume

Green chilli prices in Dinajpur's Hili have plummeted to Tk 120 per kg, down from Tk 400 just a few days ago, following a surge in supply driven by fresh imports from India.

On Thursday, imported Indian green chillies were sold at Tk 100 per kg at wholesale rates within the Hili Land Port area.

A survey of retail markets in Hili on Friday revealed that imported Indian green chillies were retailing at Tk 140 per kg, while local varieties were selling at Tk 120 per kg. The sharp reduction in prices has brought significant relief to local consumers who had been struggling with abnormal price spikes in recent weeks.

Port officials reported that green chilli imports from India resumed on Monday (August 3). Following a pause on Wednesday for the July Mass Uprising Day holiday, trade resumed on Thursday. Over three operational days, 167 metric tonnes of green chillies arrived via 24 Indian trucks through Hili Land Port.

Local traders noted that domestic supply shortages had previously caused prices to surge past Tk 400 per kg. However, the steady arrival of Indian shipments has rapidly stabilized both wholesale and retail markets.

Md. Uzzal Hossain, Deputy Assistant Officer at the Hili Land Port Plant Quarantine Centre, stated that import permits (IP) totaling 36,000 tonnes of green chillies have been granted to 74 importers. He added that continued shipments under these permits will further boost market supply and help keep prices affordable in the coming days.
