Bridge turns death trap as vehicles risk lives in Nandail

Vehicles and pedestrians have been using a bridge at great risk for a long time as its safety guardrail has broken down.

The bridge has now become a death trap for drivers and pedestrians.

The incident occurred at a bridge near Kaliapara Bazar in Ward No. 2 of Moazzempur Union in Nandail upazila.

According to local sources, the bridge was built over the Mogha River near Kaliapara Bazar. The safety guardrail on the western side of the bridge had been gradually deteriorating for a long time.

Around 20 to 25 days ago, the guardrail suddenly collapsed completely and fell into the river.

Since then, vehicles and pedestrians have been crossing the bridge at risk.

Local resident Sujon Mia said the western-side guardrail suddenly collapsed and fell into the river one or two days before the last FIFA World Cup final. Since then, hundreds of pedestrians and vehicles have been using the bridge every day despite the risk.

Another local resident, Bulbul, said the road is an important route connected to the Kishoreganj-Mymensingh highway.

Hundreds of easy-bikes, trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles use the road from Kanurampur Bazar towards Kaliapara Bazar, Sangramkhali Bazar, Ekta Bazar, Kharua and Deyaoan Bazar.

Hundreds of students also use the bridge on foot to travel to Kaliapara Bazar, Bahadurpur High School and Bahadurpur Government Primary School.

As the safety guardrail on one side of the bridge is missing, a major accident could occur at any time, locals said.

They demanded immediate repair of the damaged section.

When contacted, Nandail Upazila Engineer Golam Kibria said he was unaware of the matter. He said he would look into it and take necessary measures.
