Info minister opens 15-day tree fair in Barishal

A 15-day divisional tree plantation campaign and tree fair has begun in Barishal.


Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon formally inaugurated the fair by releasing balloons and festoons at the city's Bell’s Park ground today.


Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, the minister said Bangladesh and the whole world are facing serious risks due to climate change.


“Especially our coastal regions are at high risk. Global effective steps and coordinated initiatives are needed to address this problem,” he said.


Urging all to be aware of fuel consumption, Swapon said if emphasis is not put on the use of environment-friendly fuel, this world will become unlivable for humans in future.


Reiterating the strong commitment of the incumbent government to addressing climate change and environmental protection, he said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman does not believe in cheap development.
 

The biggest proof of his visionary thinking and effective initiatives to protect the environment is the mega plan to plant 25 crore trees across the country in the next five years, he said.


The minister said five crore saplings will be planted every year and this tree fair is being held across the country to achieve this goal.


With Barishal Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed in the chair, Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abu Raihan Muhammad Saleh and Divisional Forest Officer Mohammad Rafiqul Islam spoke on the occasion, among others.


Students from various schools and colleges, representatives of civil society and commoners were present at the event.


After the meeting, Swapon visited 50 stalls and nurseries participating in the fair.


The fair, organised by 50 nurseries from different districts of Barishal division, will remain open for all from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm every day.
