Indian caught stealing sugarcane

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) handed over an Indian national to police on Sunday after he was allegedly caught entering Bangladesh and stealing sugarcane from a local field in Panchagarh.
The man, identified as 35-year-old Dipankar Gop, was handed over to Panchagarh Sadar Police Station following a flag meeting between BGB and India's Border Security Force (BSF) at battalion commander level at the Magurmari border in Panchagarh Sadar upazila on Sunday afternoon.
Dipankar is a tea worker and a resident of Tasarpara area under Rajganj police station in India's Jalpaiguri district. He is the son of Mishripal Gop.
According to BGB, Dipankar crossed the border into Bangladesh through the Birajot area of Panchagarh Sadar on Saturday morning and entered a sugarcane field, where local residents caught him while allegedly stealing sugarcane.
The locals subsequently detained him in the village and demanded his return in exchange for 78-year-old Tamiz Uddin, who they alleged had been taken away from the same border area on Wednesday morning.
The BGB and BSF held a flag meeting over the issue, but no resolution was reached. The locals later handed Dipankar over to BGB.
BGB subsequently handed him over to Panchagarh Sadar Police on Sunday afternoon.
Ashish Kumar Shil, inspector (investigation) of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station, said legal action was being taken against the Indian national.
