Gold worth Tk 3.72cr recovered from car near Airport

Customs intelligence officials recovered 14 gold bars and 12 gold sheets worth an estimated Tk 3.72 crore from a car near the roundabout outside Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Monday.

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) conducted the search based on a tip-off, according to a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Monday.

Officials signalled the car to stop for a search at the roundabout area outside the airport. Sensing the situation, the driver, identified as Md Shamim Mia, abandoned the vehicle and fled.

Later, with assistance from other intelligence agencies present at the scene, officials of the CIID's Airfreight Circle searched the car and recovered the gold. They also seized three mobile phones, including a new iPhone 17 Pro, Tk 107,585 in cash, a used laptop, eight debit and credit cards issued by different banks, two driving licences, a national identity card and other items.

The recovered items were later inventoried at the Customs Hall. Testing at Dhaka Customs House confirmed that the 1,812 grams (155.35 bhori) of gold was 24-carat. Its estimated market value is Tk 3,72,72,892.48.

The CIID said legal proceedings are underway to file a case with Airport Police Station against the absconding driver and others involved in the incident.
