Once upon a time, the day exam results were published meant something truly special. From the morning, the lanes and alleys of the neighborhood would be filled with anticipation, and by afternoon, news of success would begin to arrive. Someone’s son had passed, someone’s daughter had achieved an outstanding result and such news did not belong to just one family; it became a source of joy for the entire neighborhood or community.

There would be crowds of neighbors in front of the house, blessings from elders, and packets of sweets in the hands of children. All these made the day of the results feel like a social festival. Times have changed now. There is still plenty of happiness on the day of the SSC examination results, but the way that happiness is celebrated has changed. The sight of sweets being distributed throughout neighborhoods seems to be gradually disappearing.

Once, Exam Results Meant a Neighborhood-Wide Celebration

In the past, there were very limited ways of finding out examination results. Online results were unheard of, and most families did not even have mobile phones. Once the results were posted on the school notice board, the wait would begin. If someone returned from school with good news, it would spread throughout the surrounding houses within moments.

When a boy or girl achieved a good result, neighbors would come over to congratulate the family. The head of the household would bring sweets from the market. Those who could afford a little more might buy roshogolla, sandesh, or doi; those with fewer means might share a small packet of sweets. But it was not the quantity of sweets that mattered. What mattered was sharing the happiness with everyone.

If a child from one family passed an examination, the aunties, uncles, and grandparents from neighboring houses would feel proud as if the child were their own. Students who performed well would receive blessings from the elders of the neighborhood, while younger children would be inspired by their achievements.

There Is Still Happiness Today, but the Celebration Has Changed.

As soon as the results are released, social media fills up with congratulations, photographs, greetings, and stories of success.

But unlike in the past, scenes of sweets being distributed throughout an entire neighborhood or community are rarely seen anymore. When a child achieves a good result, the family members themselves tend to celebrate more privately. Some call relatives, some post photographs of their children on social media, while others go out to a restaurant with family members.

In other words, the happiness is still there, and the celebration is still there, only its scope has changed.

Celebrations at Restaurants, Congratulations on Social Media

In the past, news of success would reach a neighbor’s doorstep. Now it reaches people through Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, or phone calls. Earlier, one had to carry a box of sweets to the neighboring house; today, a single social media post can bring congratulations from hundreds of people.

Many families now choose to celebrate their children’s good results by going to their favorite restaurants. Parents, siblings, grandparents, and close relatives may gather for lunch or dinner. Some cut a cake, some take photographs, while others arrange a special meal.

There is certainly no shortage of happiness in this. In fact, people now have more opportunities to celebrate in their own way. But along with this, a part of the collective joy has disappeared, the kind of joy in which one family’s success became a reason for celebration throughout the entire neighborhood.

Why Has the Tradition of Distributing Sweets Disappeared?

Social change is a major reason behind this. People in urban areas are now busier than before. Even when they live in the same building, many neighbors do not regularly see or interact with one another. In many places, the close-knit relationships that once existed within neighborhoods have weakened.

Urban life has also increased people’s sense of personal space. We cannot stop the passage of time. Technology will not disappear from our lives either. But bringing back the habit of sharing social happiness is not impossible. If a student achieves a good result today, on the day of the SSC results, the family can celebrate together while also offering a sweet to the neighbors.

Perhaps boxes of sweets will never again travel throughout an entire neighborhood as they once did. But the culture of recognizing that one family’s success can also bring happiness to others can still be revived.

Because passing an examination is not merely a result. It is recognition of a family’s years of hard work. And when that happiness crosses the boundaries of a few households and spreads throughout the neighborhood, a simple examination result becomes a social celebration.

Today, an SSC success may be celebrated around a restaurant table. Hundreds of congratulations may arrive instantly through social media. Yet somewhere in our hearts, we still remember those old days, a son or daughter has passed an examination, and sweets are being distributed throughout the entire neighborhood in celebration.

That scene may no longer exist as it once did. But its sweet taste remains timeless in the pages of our memories.
