American actress Sadie Sink has become a major talking point worldwide following her appearance as Jean Grey in Marvel’s latest Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. At just 24, Sink has already built an impressive Hollywood résumé through projects including Stranger Things, The Whale and Taylor Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film.

The new Spider-Man film has dominated the global box office and social media, with Sink’s mysterious character emerging as one of the biggest talking points. Her portrayal of Jean Grey has also sparked widespread discussion about her connection with Peter Parker and the character’s potential role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Born in Texas in 2002, Sink began acting at a very young age. She started performing in local theatre at just seven and gained early recognition on Broadway. In 2012, she played the lead role in the Broadway musical Annie. Three years later, she appeared alongside Helen Mirren in The Audience, portraying a young Queen Elizabeth II.

Sink rose to international fame in 2017 after joining the second season of Netflix’s hit science-fiction series Stranger Things as Max Mayfield. Her performance in the fourth season, particularly as the emotionally troubled skateboarder Max, earned widespread critical acclaim.

She later appeared in Taylor Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film and starred alongside Brendan Fraser in the 2022 film The Whale. Her performance in the film earned her a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. More recently, she received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in the Broadway play John Proctor Is the Villain.

Her entry into Marvel was surrounded by secrecy. In March 2025, Deadline reported that Sink had joined Tom Holland’s new Spider-Man film. The news immediately sparked speculation among fans that she could be playing Jean Grey.

Sink later revealed that she first learned about the online casting rumours herself. According to the actress, she was surprised to see reports claiming she had joined the film because Marvel had not yet contacted her. Two days later, she said, Marvel reached out to her.

The studio kept her character tightly under wraps for more than a year. Even the trailer presented her as a mysterious hooded character with mind-control abilities, without revealing her identity.

The secret was reportedly exposed accidentally at the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles when musician Steve Lacy referred to her character as “Jean” while answering a journalist’s question.

Marvel reportedly went to extraordinary lengths to protect the character’s identity. Sink has said she was not even given the complete script when she began filming in London. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and executive producer Louis D’Esposito later explained the character to her in detail.

Sink described Jean Grey as a complex and traumatised young woman whose destructive behaviour stems from deep emotional pain. Director Destin Daniel Cretton reportedly encouraged her to portray Jean not as a conventional villain, but as an angry and emotionally broken young woman.

Jean Grey is also expected to have a future in Marvel’s X-Men franchise. There has been widespread speculation that Kit Connor could play Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, while Samara Weaving could portray Emma Frost. However, the details of Sink’s Marvel contract and the number of films she has signed for remain undisclosed.
