Akheri Chahar Shomba today

The holy Akheri Chahar Shomba, marking the reported recovery of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) from illness, is being observed today with due religious solemnity across the country.

The day falls on the last Wednesday of the Islamic month of Safar. According to the traditional account, the Prophet (PBUH) fell seriously ill at the beginning of 23 AH and, as his condition deteriorated, was unable to lead prayers. He reportedly recovered on 28 Safar, took a bath and led the prayers on that day.

The news of his recovery brought joy among the companions, who reportedly distributed charity, including thousands of gold coins. However, the Prophet (PBUH) fell ill again the following day and died 15 days later, on 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal.

The Persian term ‘Akheri Chahar Shomba’ means ‘last Wednesday’. Muslims traditionally observe the day by offering charity, following the practice attributed to the companions.

Although Akheri Chahar Shomba is not a general or mandatory public holiday in Bangladesh, it is recognised as an optional or reserved holiday. All educational institutions across the country will remain closed today on the occasion.
