BATB workers form human chain demanding permanent employment

A human chain and protest were held in Meherpur demanding permanent employment of workers engaged in various activities of British American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATB), abolishing the contracting system and directly appointing them under BATB.

This program was held in front of the Meherpur BATB office at around 12 noon today, Sunday (August 16) at the initiative of BATB Field Technician and Office Staff Workers Welfare Union. Later, the workers held a protest march there.

The organization's central president Ariful Islam, general secretary Samiul Islam, organizing secretary Md. Sohel Rana and other leaders and workers of the organization were present at the program.

The speakers at the human chain said that although they have been working for BATB for years in a permanent nature, they are working as workers of a contracting company on paper.

As a result, workers are being deprived of various facilities and rights due to the lack of direct employment. They also alleged that when they talk about realizing their rights, they are threatened with losing their jobs.

The workers complained that there are irregularities in salary payment, overtime work and non-payment of overtime allowance, weekly leave and other legal benefits are being deprived. The speakers also claimed that even if an accident occurs at work, proper medical assistance and compensation are often not available.

They said that despite working permanently in the same organization for a long time, the workers' jobs have not been made permanent. Therefore, the contract system should be abolished and direct permanent employment should be arranged under BATB.

The speakers also said that if their demands are not accepted quickly, a stricter agitation program will be announced in the future.
