Nibaran Hajong, who suffered burns to around 80 per cent of his body in a candle fire, is undergoing treatment at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Acting Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal went to the hospital on Sunday night and took updates on his condition and treatment from the doctors.
Nibaran was admitted to the unit at around 10:45pm on Sunday after being brought to Dhaka for advanced treatment under Kaiser Kamal’s supervision.
According to doctors, his condition is critical and he requires prolonged and specialised treatment.
Nibaran was sleeping at his home in Lakshmipur village of Durgapur Union after lighting a candle due to a power outage. Around midnight, the candle reportedly caused a fire in the house. He sustained burns while trying to put out the fire.
With the help of locals, he was initially taken to Durgapur Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
However, his family, which is financially disadvantaged, was struggling to bear the cost of his treatment. His relatives said they lacked the financial means to continue his treatment.
Kaiser Kamal visited him at the hospital, spoke to the doctors and enquired about his treatment.
According to Durgapur principal Shahidullah Khan, Kaiser Kamal has also been supporting people in various ways, including funding bridge construction, helping families struggling with marriage expenses, building homes for homeless people and providing financial assistance to school and college students.
